2026 Tree Code Update
2026 Tree Code Update
Portland’s Tree Code is being reviewed to align with the community vision following the adoption of the new Portland Urban Forest Plan in October 2025. The project team is currently in Phase 1 of a two-year process, researching and listening to community feedback to ensure the regulations remain responsive to current challenges. The upcoming code changes focus on achieving an equitable tree canopy, supporting city growth targets, improving health and climate resilience against extreme weather, clarifying roles under the city’s new governance structure, simplifying regulations for users, and delivering on the plan. This briefing is an opportunity to share feedback before a proposed draft moves becomes available to public review in 2027.
Policy Tracking Recruitment
The committee relies on coalition members to track policy changes, land use regulations, and bureau decisions to ensure neighborhood groups and coalition partners remain informed and participatory in ensuring the district grows and functions for all transportation modes. With numerous initiatives happening at the state, regional, and local government levels, there are multiple areas to monitor. Committee volunteers can fill tracking gaps for the upcoming year. Committee members are encouraged to consider their areas of interest and provide updates to the group.
Future Topics & Learning Priorities
Every year the Land Use & Transportation Committee develops a workplan of subjects the group is interested in exploring and learning more about. Community voices help identify local needs and build communication channels between projects and each of our respective groups. The committee is a forum where we can surface topics and shared areas of interest for the year ahead. Whether it is zoning or development standards, neighborhood initiatives around such as placemaking and creative use, diversifying housing options and restoring historic uses, expanding urban canopy, or addressing gaps in the transportation network, there is a wide range of potential subjects available for the committee to consider. Surfacing these areas of interest allows for prioritizing guest speakers and educational topics that address committee interests and ensuring topics are relevant.
